Reviving the Islamic Spirit 2010 Convention Print

During the 2010 holidays, this December 24th, 25th and 26th, The Muslim Girls Project at APAA revved up to do some HIV/AIDS outreach and prevention work with the Muslim community at one of the largest North American Muslim conventions known as Reviving the Islamic Spirit.

In the past, this event was known for its youth led focus as well as its numerous attendees and as such, it was the ideal space to do HIV/AIDS Awareness!  This year, the crowds did not disappoint:   Numerous Muslims from young to old, from Chicago to North Bay, across ethnicities, genders and degrees of religiosity were encountered at our booth.  It was the perfect place to do HIV/AIDS Awareness work, and APAA was there!

In the past, the conference did not have a history of providing HIV/AIDS education (to my knowledge), so this year’s attendance marked a pivotal entry point for such discussions.   Remarkably, our reception was an amazing success!  Comments such as “you guys should be here every year!”, “This is the first time I’ve learned something educational at the RIS bazaar!”, “this is really, really important..wow….keep it up”….”our Islamic school could very much benefit from this knowledge…” etc, were very inspiring.  Operating within the socio-cultural religious framework of Muslims was central to our success!

A BIG thank you to our volunteers who help made this event possible!    Next year, we’ll do it again!

Habibah Ahmad, Project Coordinator.
